I. Academy

The name Academy resonates back to the fourth century B.C. to Plato’s philosophical school near Athens. Today it carries the sense of a community of learning formed around the classical tradition. Similarly, Saint Augustine founded a monastery in his hometown of Thagaste where he and his friends and family could pursue Christian wisdom together. Life in community has always been a central element of Christian teaching.

We are an Academy in that we value community and our program is focused around a particular tradition. Augustine wrote a treatise On Christian Doctrine as a sort of constitution for their life at Thagaste. He explained that Christians could make use of the truths they found in classical thought because all truth is God’s truth wherever it may be found. This is the classical Christian vision, the particular tradition that defines and shapes the life of our community.

Here at Saint Augustine’s Academy, we share a common life of prayer, study, meals, and play. We share ourselves with each other in all of the school’s activities. Our faculty and staff lead by example in the love of God, in the love of each other, and in the love of learning. As in a family, our priority is personal relationships, especially between faculty and students.
