As a Christian school, we believe in Truth, and so we teach as truth that which is true for all people at all times and in all places. If something is the truth, then it is true in all circumstances for ever. We teach the tenets of our Statement of Faith as truth. These things are not negotiable and do not depend on human opinion. At the same time, we recognize that not everyone accepts these tenets as truth and that among Christians themselves there may be some disagreement over particulars of formulation and even matters of substance.
There is room for disagreement at Saint Augustine’s Academy. Parents and children are not asked to sign the Statement of Faith. On the contrary, we encourage everyone to learn more about their own tradition and to examine the underlying assumptions and presuppositions of their beliefs. In the pursuit of truth, we value rigorous and charitable dialogue of every possible matter; intellectual honesty requires this. We seek to cultivate generosity of spirit and the ability to interact constructively with those with whom we disagree.
When it comes to the great questions of life, however, no education can or should even try to be neutral. Our conscious and deliberate intention is to propose the central tenets of our faith for everyone’s consideration and engagement. Our hope is that everyone at Saint Augustine’s Academy will understand how Christians see and think about the world. With regard to creation, for instance, we teach the theory of evolution so that our children know and understand what this is and why it is important. But we also evaluate the theory of evolution from the Christian perspective and place it within the broader context of Christian belief.
