V. Discipline

The need for discipline stems directly from the mission of Saint Augustine’s Academy: To raise our children in knowledge and virtue through classical Christian education. We raise our children both to know and to do what is right. Parents have been given the authority and responsibility for raising their children directly from God, and Saint Augustine’s Academy participates with them by standing in the place of a parent during the day.

In the first place, then, we seek to model good behavior in all that we do, promoting and nurturing the virtues that we hope to instill. And in the second place, we address bad behavior, as would every responsible parent. Any behavior that has a negative impact on the school community will be addressed. One child will not be permitted to disrupt the learning of all the other children. As may be necessary, therefore, discipline will be administered for the sake of preserving an orderly environment conducive for learning.

As far as possible, we seek to handle disciplinary matters at school so that the children themselves learn to be responsible and accountable for their actions. We give them opportunity to tell their parents what happened, and then we inform the parents of the situation and of any discipline that was administered. In every situation, our goal is to respond with love for the child, working with the child toward what is best for him or her and for the school.
